Wizz Air suspends Coventry to Gdansk service

Having unveiled the route just two months ago, the airline now says it is axing the service in response to pressures on its fleet caused by the establishment of a new base in Kiev.

Best airline awards for Wizz Air

Wizz Air has been awarded two separate 'best airline' awards within the space of a fortnight.

The largest low-cost carrier based in Central and Eastern Europe was voted the best budget airline by readers of pasazer.com, one of Poland's leading online travel portals.

Some 25 per cent of respondents identified Wizz Air as the country's best low-cost airline, earning it the accolade for the fourth year running.

Wizz Air starts Coventry to Gdansk link

Wizz Air launched its new three-times-weekly service from Coventry Airport to Gdansk at the weekend.

The service - running on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays - offers a link between the Midlands and Poland's sixth-largest city.

Chris Orphanou, Chief Executive Officer of Coventry Airport, said: "We are delighted that Wizz Air is complementing its existing services to Katowice with the introduction of new flights to the important Polish commercial centre of Gdansk. The West Midlands region has strong historical links with Poland and these new flights are great news for the Polish community, business and leisure travellers."

Wizz Air re-routes Cluj-Napoca flights

Low-cost carrier Wizz Air will be re-routing flights from Cluj-Napoca International Airport this month.

The Polish-Hungarian airline is moving its Cluj-Napoca operations to Targu Mures during the period from March 22 to March 26 while runway reconstruction works take place at the airport.

All the times of departures and arrivals of flights will be unaffected by the move.

Wizz Air launches new route from Luton to Poland

WroclawWizz Air has launched its fifth route between London Luton Airport and Poland, with a new service to Wroclaw.

The five-times weekly offering sees fares starting at £19.99 one-way (including taxes and charges).

The current schedule for the route offers departures from Luton on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 8.10am, arriving at the Polish destination at 11.15am (local time).

Return flights are available on the same days, departing Wroclaw at 11.45am (local time) and arriving back at Luton at 1pm.

Wizz Air starts bus service from Luton Airport to London

Passengers on Wizz Air services landing at Luton Airport can now book an onward bus transfer to London's Victoria Station when purchasing flight tickets.

The low-cost operator has integrated the new service into its booking engine, allowing people to reserve a seat on the coach service from Luton and pay online in one single transaction together with their flight.

The service is currently only available for travel into London, with tickets costing £8, but Wizz Air hopes to enable passengers to book tickets in the opposite direction in the near future. Bus departure times will coincide with Wizz Air’s flight schedule.

Doncaster Sheffield to Warsaw service to start in April

WarsawWizz Air has announced that it will start new flights from Warsaw to Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood Airport.

The low-cost operator will operate the new service from April 1, and offer three flights a week, with one-way tickets starting from £16.99.

More flights on Sofia to Luton route offered by Wizz Air

SofiaWizz Air is to base a new aircraft at Sofia resulting in an increase in flight frequency to London, as well as launch other routes from the Bulgarian capital.

The addition of an Airbus A320 from July 12, 2008, will enable the low-cost operator to offer daily flights to Luton Airport, expanding on the current four flights a week.

The airline will also start a new domestic flight to Varna, as well as flights to Milan-Bergamo, Valencia, Barcelona and Izmir (Turkey), and will increase frequencies on existing services to Rome and Dortmund.

Wizz Air moves to Cluj Airport for Transylvanian flights

Wizz Air has announced it will move its flights serving Transylvania in Romania to Cluj-Napoca International Airport and will cease flying from Tirgu Mures Airport.

The move will come into effect from November 13 and will mean its new service from Luton Airport will now land at Cluj-Napoca. The airline's decision will also impact upon its routes from Budapest, Rome and Barcelona.

Wizz Air to introduce allocated seating

Low-cost airline Wizz Air will introduce a system of allocated seating from October 29.

To be made available online at www.wizzair.com, passengers will be able to ensure they get a seat with extra legroom by paying €5 (£3.50) concurrently with the booking, or €10 (£7) after the initial booking (via the call centre or at the airport).

The system will be rolled out across the whole Wizz Air network, and comes at a time when the Polish/Hungarian airline is introducing a series of other changes. Priority boarding was launched earlier this year, and a charge for all checked-in baggage was introduced last month.

Budget operator Wizz Air is to begin a new service between Poland and the UK early next year.

The airline will launch a route between its base in Katowice and Gatwick, starting on January 31, 2008 with one-way tickets from £19.99.

Flights will operate daily and brings the number of routes Wizz Air now offers from Katowice to 25. The news comes soon after the start of a number of new routes to the UK by the airline, including a link from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield to Gdansk.

Wizz Air to charge for check-in luggage

Wizz Air has today (August 3) introduced a charge for each piece of checked-in baggage.

The Polish/Hungarian no-frills airline announced last October that it would charge if passengers were taking more than one checked-in bag, but this has now been extended to every bag that is checked in.

The charge will be €3/£2.50 per bag for payments made at the time of booking, or €6/£5 for payments made after the booking (ie. at the airport). It applies to all passengers booking from today for travel after October 27 (although those travellers with existing bookings will not be charged).

Wizz Air expands its Bucharest base

Wizz Air is to increase the frequency of flights between Bucharest and the UK from early next year when it takes delivery of a new aircraft.

The airline will base an additional Airbus A320 at Baneasa Airport to provide passengers with increased frequencies between the Romanian capital and Luton, with nine flights a week available from February 28, 2008.

Coventry Airport prepares for Wizz Air Katowice flights

Wizz Air is set to begin flights from Coventry Airport to Katowice in Poland tomorrow (July 13), and staff have been learning Polish to greet incoming passengers.

The airline will fly to the southern Polish city three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, using an Airbus A320 aircraft. Katowice is a convenient gateway for skiing and hiking in the Silesian mountains, and is near Krakow.

Not only will the route allow holidaymakers to sample this part of Poland, but the airport is also expecting many Poles to fly with Wizz Air to Coventry.

Polish link from Doncaster Sheffield takes flight

Wizz Air has marked the launch of its new route between Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield and Gdansk, in Poland, this week with celebratory champagne.

The new Gdansk route, joins the existing flight to Katowice, and comes soon after Wizz Air announced details of further expansion at Robin Hood Airport, with new flights to Poznan and Wroclaw starting in February 2008.

Passengers on the inaugural flight to Gdansk were treated to complimentary refreshments laid on ahead of the departure of the 11.50am, and a bottle of champagne was presented to Peter Stobiecki the first passenger to check-in for the flight.

Wizz Air increases flights to Hungary and Romania

Wizz Air has announced an increase in the frequency of its flights from London to Hungary and Romania.

The airline will begin offering nine weekly flights from London Luton to the Hungarian capital Budapest, representing an increase in capacity of 12.5 per cent.

This is part of a general expansion at the Hungarian capital, whereby Wizz Air will also begin flights to Milan (Bergamo) and also increase the frequency on Rome, Paris and Eindhoven routes.

Both new services will begin in February 2008, with tickets on sale now at www.wizzair.com. One-way fares begin at £14.20, including taxes and charges.

Flights from Luton will operate five times per week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. On the way out, flights leave at 8.10am, arriving at 11.15am; coming back, flights leave Wroclaw at 11.45am and get back to London at 1pm.

Wizz Air passengers travelling to Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport from Doncaster can benefit from free travel on the Airport Arrow shuttle bus.

Beginning today (June 20), the number 707 bus operated by Airport Arrow between Doncaster Interchange and Robin Hood Airport will be free to use for Wizz Air passengers.

Wizz Air launches new flights from Poland

No-frills operator Wizz Air is to open an operational base at Poznan, in the west of Poland, and has announced the launch of two new routes to the UK.

Poznan is the airline's seventh base and from January 31, 2008 there will be flights to Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Glasgow Prestwick, complementing the existing service to Luton.

József Váradi, the airline's chief executive officer, said: "Wizz Air continues to pursue its expansion strategy in Poland with the establishment of the Poznan base early next year following the developments in Katowice, Warsaw and Gdansk. The move is expected to create hundreds of local jobs and significant revenue uplift for the tourism industry in the region."

Wizz Air gets ready for new Romanian flights

Wizz Air is to open an operational base in Romania as it prepares to offer more flights to the country, including two new services from the UK.

The base will function inside the Henri Coanda Airport until the reopening of the Bucharest International Airport and will host a new Airbus A320 aircraft, which will be flown by a Romanian team of pilots and cabin crew.

Currently, Wizz Air operates flights to a number of European destinations from Romania, including a link between Bucharest and Luton. However from October it will offer flights from the Romanian capital to Liverpool and a link from Tirgu Mures - in Transylvania - to Luton.

Wizz Air to charge for second bag and priority boarding

No-frills airline Wizz Air has begun charging passengers to check in a second piece of luggage.

The measure was introduced yesterday (January 15) and will see customers charged €5 (£3.30) per extra piece if paid online at the same time as the booking, or €10 (£6.60) if paid after the initial booking was made. Additional bags added later will be charged at €10 (£6.60) each.

Charges for hold baggage are likely to become more widespread across the low-cost airline sector, as carriers move to increase their earnings from ancillary revenue sources. This time last year, low-cost leader Ryanair announced a fee for check-in baggage.

GdanskWizz Air is to begin a service between Doncaster Sheffield’s Robin Hood Airport and Gdansk, in the north of Poland.

The airline will offer four flights a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from July 15, 2007 with one-way tickets starting from £23.99, inclusive of charges.

At the same time Wizz Air said it would begin flights from Gdansk to Malmo Sturup Airport, in Sweden, and is looking at further expansion from the Polish city.

Jozsef Varadi, chief executive officer of Wizz Air, said: “Wizz Air has become the largest airline of all at Gdansk Airport and remains committed to the region and will continue to offer more new destinations and more low fares, carrying over 600,000 passengers next year."

New Poland links from Wizz Air

Wizz Air has announced new routes to Katowice (Poland) from Belfast, Bournemouth and Coventry, beginning next summer.

The new routes will all operate three times weekly, with the Belfast flights beginning on May 29, the Bournemouth flights on July 14 and the Coventry flights on July 28.

Together with new routes from Katowice to Eindhoven, Bourgas and Crete, the three UK links will lead to a 50 per cent increase in capacity at Katowice International Airport, compared to this year.

Wizz Air and Sky Europe plan Turkish connection

No-frills airlines Wizz Air and Sky Europe are aiming to start flights to Istanbul later this year, Luchtzak Aviation reports.

According to the Turkish press, the two carriers have applied for permission to fly from the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority and have signed deals with Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen International Airport.

If permission is granted, Wizz Air and Sky Europe will aim to begin flights in September or October and will join easyJet, Germanwings and Pegasus Airlines as carriers that operate scheduled flights to the Turkish hub.

Low-cost airline Wizz Air has given its four millionth passenger a voucher entitling him to unlimited travel over the airline's route network for a year.

The Polish-Hungarian carrier has been operating for just over two years and has expanded its network to cover 40 destinations in Europe.

Frequent Wizz Air customer Gyongyi Poti was the four millionth passenger. He said: "It is such a surprise. I have never won anything in my life. I am a frequent flyer on Wizz Air; I travel often to Italy so I am really very happy to have won this prize."

Low-cost airline Wizz Air will be extending its routes by adding regular flights from Liverpool's John Lennon Airport (JLA) to Gdansk on the Polish Baltic coast.

The budget carrier will run three flights per week to Gdansk, which joins Warsaw and Katowice as Wizz Air's third Polish destination served by JLA.

In addition to adding the new service the airline is also increasing the number of flights to each of its other Polish destinations from three per week to five.

Wizz Air introduces new prepay scheme

Low-cost airline Wizz Air has announced a new prepay scheme that should make fares even cheaper for passengers.

The new WizzPlus service is an incentive scheme aimed at frequent flyers with Wizz Air.

It offers bonuses when customers prepay for their Wizz Air flights, as part of a personal account with the airline. The prepaid amount plus the bonus can then be used to book any Wizz Air flights seats with no limitations imposed.

Wizz Air adds more flights to Sofia

SofiaJust a week after launching its inaugural flight to Sofia, Wizz Air has announced that it will increase frequency on the route due to high demand.

From December 17, the airline will add an additional weekly flight to the Bulgarian capital from its main base in Budapest.

Wizz Air flies first service from Poznan

Wizz Air commenced service from Poznan in Poland at the weekend, with the first flight arriving in London's Luton airport on Sunday, September 18.

Poznan will initially be served by four flights a week to and from Luton. However, the airline has announced that due to already strong demand, a fifth weekly service will operate from December 1.

Wizz Air to begin low-cost Bulgaria flights

Wizz Air will launch flights to the Bulgarian capital Sofia later this month.

From September 18, the budget airline will fly from London Luton to Sofia via Budapest.

It offers four flights a week to the Bulgarian capital - on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays - until September 26.

Thereafter, Wizz will offer three flights a week with connections to Sofia on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

Wizz Air continues to grow

Low-cost airline Wizz Air is continuing to stake its claim as a major player in the European budget airline sector.

The airline, which operates predominantly in central and Eastern Europe, has just announced that it is adding an additional plane to its fleet.

Wizz Air is leasing an additional plane from the International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), adding to a major order earlier this year for up to 24 new planes from Airbus.

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ILFC, believes Wizz Air is one of the fastest growing airlines in the world.

"We have been impressed with Wizz Air's rapid and well-managed growth," he said.
