Luton Airport axes terminal drop-off charge
May 14, 2009London Luton Airport has scrapped its £1 fee for dropping off passengers at the terminal before the surcharge even came into force.
Officials had planned to impose the levy on motorists who drive up to a drop-off point located next to the airport, prompting an outcry from passengers.
The so-called "kiss and drop" levy was due to come into effect on April 29, making Luton the first airport in Britain to apply such a surcharge. But speaking to The Telegraph, a spokesman for the gateway confirmed the U-turn.
"We haven't implemented it yet," he told the paper. "There is no fixed date for it – we will advise passengers in due course. Nothing has been set in stone."
The Air Transport Users Council welcomed the moving, saying: "We hope this will mark a reversal of the trend which has seen airports charging passengers directly for services.
"Passenger should be charged directly through their plane ticket."
Luton Airport already charges travellers £1 for the clear plastic bags required to get certain items airside, as well as £3 for fast-track security queuing.

Merely another way for the business to get more money in these desperate financial times. I think they should scrap the plastic bag fee as well, or at least make it sensible like 10p.
