EasyJet plans sky-high wedding ceremonies
May 6, 2009Lovebirds flying with easyJet could soon be saying "I do" in the skies if the no-frills airline presses ahead with its latest revenue-raising scheme.
Hot on the heels of Ryanair's consideration of a 'fat tax', easyJet now says it is investigating the prospect of conducting marriages on-board its flights.
The low-cost carrier believes that the difficult economic climate has created a market for quickie wedding ceremonies en route to honeymoons.
"We're excited about these plans," easyJet spokesman Paul told The Guardian. "If there is the opportunity, our pilots could be marrying couples in the air.
"Future brides and grooms can say 'I will' on the flight from London Gatwick to Olbia, on Sardinia, for example. After their marriage at a height of 30,000 feet, they then can go directly on their honeymoon."
The legal details have yet to be worked out, however, with sceptics noting that weddings must be officiated by a licensed registrar in order to be binding.
EasyJet announced today that its half-year losses have more than doubled, though CEO Andy Harrison insisted the airline remains "financially strong".

But will easyJet be allowing customers to consummate the marriage on board? Or will that carry an extra charge?
