Newquay Airport closed

Newquay Cornwall Airport has been closed for three weeks so that Cornwall County Council can carry out work on the air traffic control system.

Passengers affected by the temporary closure may be able to claim compensation from the local council, after they failed to get the necessary Civil Aviation Authority license for their new base.

This disruption is likely to see thousands of travellers transported to other airports in the south-west and Skybus have already assured their passengers that they will be providing facilities to move those affected from Newquay to Land's End Airport.

Andrew Mitchell, Cornwall councillor, suggested that there may be a case for compensation for those affected.

He told the BBC: "We will look at it sympathetically and also any legitimate claims from the public, we will be looking at our legal obligations."

The main commercial airport for south-west England operates a number of domestic and European services, including those to Cork, Dublin, Alicante, Leeds and Manchester.
