Iceland Express delays launch of Gatwick base
July 4, 2008Iceland Express has postponed the launch of a new link between London Gatwick Airport and capital city Reykjavik.
The national carrier pushed the date for the first flight back to next spring, scrapping earlier plans to begin operating the five times weekly connection on September 16.
A full refund or replacement booking has been offered to anyone who purchased tickets for one of the earlier flights. The airline's existing service between London Stansted Airport and Reykjavik remains unaffected.
Airline spokesperson Birna Gudmundsdottir said that the decision to postpone the new route was taken in part because of increased fuel prices - with oil costs reaching a new high of $145 per barrel this week.
"While the number of bookings has never been higher for Iceland Express, we do not want the current increase in fuel costs to impact on the ticket prices for our customers," she explained.
Gudmundsdottir added: "Iceland Express is remaining cautious in the current uncertain economic climate, while continuing to deliver the best possible service at the best possible price. Iceland Express is a budget airline and we want to ensure it stays that way."
