Lufthansa considering Edinburgh expansion
November 12, 2007German national airline Lufthansa intends to expand its presence at Edinburgh Airport over the coming year and a half.
Having announced that it would begin a three-times daily link between Bristol and Frankfurt in March next year, the carrier is now turning its attention to the Scottish capital.
It is considering either increasing the frequency on its existing flights to Frankfurt, or introducing a new route to a major German city, The Scotsman reports.
Speaking on a visit to Edinburgh, Lufthansa UK general manager Marianne Sammann said: "There are no immediate plans to expand in Edinburgh over the next few months or so, but it is something that is definitely on our radar, perhaps over the next 18 months.
"We have a number of options, but we will be deciding whether it would be best to increase our Frankfurt flights to four a day, or fly to another place in Germany. Munich, our second base and our new base at Dusseldorf would be likely options."
She added that the majority of passengers flying from Edinburgh to Frankfurt transfer to onward flights, with popular final destinations including Beijing.
Frankfurt Airport is Germany's largest airport and serves 265 non-stop destinations - more than London Heathrow.
