Monarch baggage check-in fee to be introduced
September 19, 2007Monarch has announced that it is to introduce a charge for passengers to check-in luggage on all its scheduled flights
For all flights departing after November 1 it will now cost £3.99 per bag each way to check-in online. Passengers who check-in their luggage at the desk will face a £10 fee per bag each way and the option of checking in over the telephone is also available, but this will cost £8 per bag each way.
Liz Savage, managing director of flyMonarch.com, said "It is now common practice amongst airlines to charge those customers who elect to take hold baggage and by doing this we will be able to keep our flight prices low.
"Since the launch of our online check-in service earlier this year, there has been a notable reduction in the amount of hold baggage carried on our flights. Passengers are preferring to minimise the time spent in queues at the airport, opting to check in from home and by-passing the fast bag-drop desks at the airports by travelling with hand luggage only."
Online check-in is available to passengers between 24 and four and a half hours before departure and the airline's hand baggage allowance allows one carry-on bag per person up to 10kg in weight and within the standard Department for Transport dimensions, 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.
Last month Ryanair announced it was to start charging passengers for using its airport check-in services, on top of the existing fee it charges to place bags in the hold.

I, for one, won't use any airline where I have to pay to check in a suitcase. For pity's sake how is one expected to go away on holiday with personal items packed in something not much bigger than a carrier bag.
Another greedy airline rears its ugly head!!

I totally agree. How many more ways can the airlines charge us for the same seat. I am sick and tired of being fleeced by companies who charge for services as though they were 'extras'. I consider baggage a necessity when going on holiday for 2 weeks. I also do not understand why I have to pay to check in - this again is not an 'extra'. The insane have certainly taken over this asylum.
