Ryanair offers advice as Spanish strike action looms
October 13, 2006Ryanair is warning passengers of potential delays and problems on flights to Spain as baggage handling staff at a number of airports threaten industrial action.
Spanish baggage handlers plan to stop work on October 16, 18 and 23 at the airports in Girona, Reus, Jerez, Seville, Santiago, Almeria, Granada, Murcia, Valencia, Zaragosa, Santander and Vitoria.
In a statement the budget airline has said it hope to keep disruption to a minimum and operate flights, although baggage handling facilities at the Spanish airports may not be available:
“We may be unable to accept checked baggage on all flights to and from the above airports on these dates. We recommend that all passengers travelling with hand baggage only check-in online to minimise disruption.”
For those checking in hand luggage online, Ryanair is reminding passengers that there is a maximum weight of 10kgs, with dimensions no greater than 55cmx40cmx20cm.
Ryanair is promising to keep people up to date with the latest news on the planned strikes via its website.

As a result of the strike in Spain, we can only take hand luggage. Ryanair recommends that we checkin online. However, Ryanair has not updated their online check-in and as a result you cannot check-in online, even if you want to, because you had previously intended to take cases! How ridiculous is that?!

As a result of this strike my return flight from Granada on October 16 was cancelled. Ryanair is refusing compensation quoting extraordinary circumstances. As they knew in advance of the strike I don't think it is. Has anyone been successful in getting compensation or pursuing a claim through the small claims court in these circumstances?
