EasyJet begins Marrakech link
July 5, 2006
EasyJet has launched its new route between London Gatwick and Marrakech in Morocco.
Fares for the daily route, which began flying yesterday (July 4), begin at £30.99 one-way, including taxes and charges.
The Marrakech link makes easyJet the first airline to fly to Morocco under the European Union's open skies agreement, which allows EU-registered airlines to fly to any airports for any price agreed between the two countries.
The Moroccan government has plans to increase tourist numbers and has therefore developed a more liberal attitude towards aviation. The new easyJet route is expected to bring around 90,000 passengers to Marrakech in its first year.
Marrakech is an important cultural centre in Morocco and is home to the country's largest souk (traditional market). It also boasts the vibrant Djemaa el Fna – the busiest square in Africa.
EasyJet's David Osborne commented: "Today is an exciting day for easyJet - as the first airline to operate to Morocco under the new open skies agreement, we continue to seize opportunities and lead the industry."
