Ryanair considers World Cup promotion
May 9, 2006Irish airline Ryanair is thinking of running a mischievous promotion tied in to next month's World Cup in Germany, offering free tickets for each goal that England concedes during the tournament.
Speaking to the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said: "We can imagine something like 100,000 free tickets for every goal England concede."
However, Mr O'Leary stressed that the promotion would not be anti-English but merely a tease. Many of the low-cost airline's customers are English.
The carrier offers almost twice as many destinations from London Stansted as it does from Dublin and has other significant UK bases.
The World Cup begins on June 9 and runs until July 9. Ryanair is running another promotion offering €33 tickets to Germany during the football tournament.
