SkyEurope opens Prague hub
February 15, 2006More cheap flights to the Czech Republic could be just around the corner after low-cost airline SkyEurope yesterday unveiled Prague's Ruzyně Airport as its fifth base.
The central-European airline marked the occasion by announcing its first seven routes from the airport.
It will inaugurate its Czech venture with services to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan Bergamo, Naples, Nice, Paris Orly and Rome Fiumicino.
Although no UK services appear on the initial programme, which will start on April 10, SkyEurope aims to "rapidly expand" its Czech route network with the addition of further routes.
Arguing that Prague lacks a dedicated low-cost airline with a base in the city, SkyEurope said the move was a natural step in its regional expansion plan.
But SkyEurope's entry into the Czech market comes as the budget airline appears to be shifting its focus away from neighbouring Poland.
SkyEurope is rumoured to be cancelling several Polish routes, including its Warsaw to London Stansted service.
The Slovakia-based airline claims to be the largest no-frills airline in central Europe.
