Turning to the Foreign Office for travel advice

When we head off to the more exotic corners of the globe, how many of us consider checking the Foreign Office for up-to-date travel information?

That is one of the questions asked in a report published by the Foreign Policy Centre, an independent think-tank, and is an increasingly important one as more and more people head overseas for holidays.

The study’s findings are highlighted in the Observer, which claims 10,000 Britons travelling abroad are expected to die, have an accident or end up in hospital.

And rather worryingly the number of UK people in overseas jails has gone up 50 per cent in five years to 3,300.

The author of the report says the advice offered by the Foreign Office is extremely useful but that they should try and get more people to consult it, including linking up with holiday companies to provide information alongside booking confirmation details.
