easyJet shreds in-flight magazine

Post by Martin Rivers on Monday 23 November, 2009 in easyJet

easyJet has withdrawn all copies of the latest edition of easyJet Traveller, its in-flight magazine, because they include a fashion feature that was photographed without permission at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin.

The photographs were taken in the Field of Stelae, a site with 2,711 concrete slabs, at the memorial, which commemorates the six million victims of the Nazi genocide, and is Germany's best-known memorial site.

Uwe Neumärker, Director of the memorial, interviewed by the New Statesman, said that only projects that commemorate the Jewish victims of the Holocaust are given permission.

He added: "The Foundation Memorial does not support commercial shoots, and fashion photography is considered to fall into this category.

"The Foundation Memorial will contact the easyJet airline company in writing in order to clarify the circumstances of the photo shoot."

easyJet responded to this by taking all the copies off its flights and apologised for the "inappropriate fashion shoot".

In a statement to the New Statesman, the low-cost airline said: "easyJet profusely apologises to anyone who may be offended by the inappropriate fashion photo shoot at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin featured in this month's issue of the in-flight magazine."

"easyJet prides itself on bringing together a wide range of cultures and beliefs and is appalled by this insensitive and inconsiderate photo-shoot, the aim of which was to highlight some of Berlin's iconic landmarks and certainly no offence was meant."

The memorial, which opened in 2004, is close to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and is visited by more  than three million people every year.
