Jet2.com unveils 'free checked bag' scheme
September 22, 2009At a time when most airlines are hiking baggage fees, Jet2.com has bucked the trend by announcing a novel 'free bag' scheme at Leeds Bradford Airport.
The low-cost carrier will allow passengers flying from the regional base to check in one piece of luggage free of charge between May and October of next year.
All flights to Spain and Portugal will be included in the special promotion, which covers bags weighing up to 22kg and results in a saving of £9.99 each way.
The offer comes on the heels of successive announcements by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Ryanair that they will be all be tightening allowances for checked luggage.
It also follows Ryanair's decision to expand operations at Leeds Bradford Airport – widely seen as an attempt to ramp up pressure on Jet2.com in its home base.
Unveiling the 'free bag' scheme, airline boss Philip Meeson noted: "Spain and Portugal are two of the most popular holiday destinations for the people of Yorkshire.
"We already boast real bargains and friendly flight times to these fantastic hotspots. However, our latest promotion – offering a free bag weighing a generous 22kg on every flight – gives people more money to spend on their holiday and room in their cases to fill with souvenirs."
To take advantage of the special offer customers are required to enter the promotional code 'FREEBAG' during the checkout stage of their online booking.
Jet2.com put the spotlight on surcharges levied by its competitors just last month, when it launched an awareness campaign featuring the slogan 'Don't get robbed'.
