Jet2.com pledges to open ninth UK base
September 3, 2009Jet2.com has said that it plans to open a ninth UK base – just days after moving into East Midlands and expanding at Newcastle and Manchester airports.
Managing director Ian Doubtfire declined to reveal details of where the new base will be located, but he told TTG it would not be in the south of England.
The airline last week said it will be basing a Boeing 757 at East Midlands Airport, following Ryanair's advance into its headquarters at Leeds Bradford Airport.
It also unveiled five new routes at Newcastle Airport and three at Manchester, and according to the latest reports that will now be followed up with another new base.
Jet2.com has a reputation for being a northern carrier, focusing heavily on the catchment areas of Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester. But with the introduction of services from East Midlands the airline has now established its first venture south of Yorkshire.
Mr Doubtfire told TTG that in addition to the as-yet unidentified new base, Jet2.com will relocate a second aircraft to East Midlands if demand meets expectations.
