Bmibaby vies for easyJet slots at East Midlands
September 9, 2009Bmibaby is staking a claim in the slots freed up at East Midlands Airport following easyJet's declaration that it is withdrawing from the base.
The low-cost carrier says it will boost its presence at the regional gateway by 40 per cent, basing three more aircraft there and adding eight new routes.
Its announcement comes just days after no-frills rival easyJet confirmed that it is cancelling all flights at the airport, which it accuses of charging excessive fees.
Bmibaby's eight new routes are Alghero in Sardinia, Barcelona, Bastia in Corsica, Cork, Dubrovnik in Croatia, Malta, Newquay and Venice.
It will also boost frequencies on several of its most routes, extending Palma to its winter flying programme and operating year-round services to Geneva and Prague.
Commenting on the revised timetable, bmibaby Managing Director Crawford Rix said: "We recognise the size of the East Midlands market and its future potential, and we will continue to offer the people of the East Midlands low-cost flights with a high-quality service."
It emerged in August that Jet2.com will also be establishing a new base at East Midlands Airport next summer, opening up seven new routes from the base.
