Recession fails to deter business travellers
July 9, 2009The recession may have prompted a wave of corporate cost-cutting, but according to new research demand for business travel remains buoyant.
Barclaycard Commercial polled more than 2,200 business people in an effort to seeing how the worsening economic situation has affected their travel habits.
Three quarters of respondents said they plan to travel at least as often as they did last year – half of whom cited corporate expansion as the main reason.
And with 85 per cent saying they prefer face-to-face meetings to video links, the findings suggest that even in the digital age physical encounters are as crucial as ever.
Barclaycard Managing Director Neil Radley commented: "The fears of the recession have not deterred some businesses from expansion. Whilst the media reports stories of businesses downsizing, the travel survey shows positive signs for business expansion."
Recent research by American Express found that heavy discounts are propping up demand for business travel, with corporate flyers bagging savings of up to 78 per cent.
