Pet Airways starts flights for 'pawssengers'
July 15, 2009The world's first pet-only airline took to the skies yesterday (Tuesday), operating its inaugural flight between New York and Los Angeles.
Pet Airways offers to transport cats and dogs – affectionately known as "pawssengers" – between five major US hubs, with one-way fares starting from $150 (about £90).
Many human carriers operate a blanket ban on animals, while others insist that pets are stowed in the cargo hold – where it is dark and temperatures can fluctuate.
At Pet Airways, however, four-legged pawssengers are transported in the cabins of specially converted planes, with attendants ensuring their wellbeing throughout the flight.
Longer journeys such as the NY to LA route even include an overnight stopover, where all the pets are fed, given a bathroom break and allowed to stretch their legs.
Recalling the experience of checking her beloved Jack Russell into the hold of a traditional carrier, Pet Airways founder Alysa Binder said: "One time in cargo was enough for us."
And with flights booked up for the next two months, many Americans seem to agree.
There are currently no plans for a similar European service, but British animal-lovers can check out our Flying with Pets travel tip for the low-down on their travel options.
