Passengers numbers at BAA airports best since autumn 2008
July 10, 2009BAA has announced that the number of travellers who used the major UK airports last month was at its highest level for nine months.
BAA, which operates London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton airports, handled 12.7 million travellers in June, 5.9 per cent less than in June 2008, but the best underlying group result since September 2008.
Passenger figures at Heathrow Airport - as a hub with fewer transfer passengers - showed a decline of 3.1 per cent. Gatwick Airport's passenger figures were down by 7.6 per cent compared to last year, Stansted, home to airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, Air Berlin and Germanwings, was 11.5 per cent down. Southampton Airport showed a decline of 7.9 per cent.
Bucking the downward trend, Edinburgh Airport's passenger figures were up, by 1.4 per cent. Glasgow and Aberdeen airports however showed decreases of 10.9 per cent and 9.8 per cent respectively.
