Flybe nabs top spot at Cardiff Airport
July 8, 2009Flybe, Europe's largest regional airline, has become the dominant carrier at Cardiff Airport after knocking rival no-frills airline bmibaby off the top spot.
Just over a year after establishing its base at Cardiff, the low-cost carrier now operates 122 flights per week to and from the Welsh gateway – ten more than bmibaby.
It offers seven routes from the airport, including flights to Paris and key domestic services to Aberdeen, Belfast City, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey and Newcastle.
Welcoming the airline's growth, Cardiff Airport spokesman Spencer Birns said: "We're pleased to see Flybe's consistent growth at Cardiff, offering Welsh passengers a wide range of routes and frequent flights to sought after destinations in the UK and Europe."
Mike Rutter, Flybe's Chief Commercial Officer, added: "This phenomenal success not only reflects the strength and success of our business model but also the fact that, in bucking the spiralling downturn of aviation trends, we have continued to add routes."
Flybe recently cemented its status as Britain's number-one regional carrier, carrying 26 per cent of domestic air passengers compared with easyJet's 23 per cent.
