AirAsia X adds more flights to Kuala Lumpur
July 2, 2009 AirAsia X has responded to strong demand for its route between London Stansted Airport and Kuala Lumpur by adding two extra weekly flights.
The no-frills carrier had operated the link five times a week since its launch in March, but following strong ticket sales it now becomes a daily service.
Demand from business as well as leisure travellers prompted the change, with passengers being attracted by airfares that often ran as low as £150 return.
Air Asia X is able to offer the extra capacity after re-locating a second eye-catching Aircraft A340 to Stansted. The jet, dubbed Xcellence, has somewhat bizarrely been spraypainted with a larger-than-life image of three cheerleaders for the Oakland Raiders.
The Malaysian carrier and the NFL side recently sealed a two-way brand promotion deal.
Commenting on the airline's wider strategy, chief executive Tony Fernandez said: "The economic downturn presents AirAsia, as Asia's largest low cost carrier, an unprecedented opportunity to gain market share with our low-fare, high-quality business model."
It was announced last month that the Malaysian no-frills airline has placed an order for ten new Airbus A350 XWB aircraft, at a cost of more than $2 billion (£1.2 billion).
