Stansted Airport launches noise consultation
June 16, 2009London Stansted Airport has launched a 16-week public consultation exploring the various ways to minimise aircraft noise over the coming years.
The investigation will solicit feedback from local residents at a series of public meetings, which will be held in towns and villages under the flightpath.
It will serve as a precursor to the airport's Noise Action Plan, which will run between 2010 and 2015 under the auspices of EU environmental regulators.
Outlining the broader vision behind the consultation, Managing Director Stewart Wingate vowed to "take appropriate actions to reduce and mitigate against" noise pollution.
"Our challenge is to manage the issue of aircraft noise in a pro-active, professional yet sensitive way as we understand it can be a real concern for our local community," he explained in a press release. "This is the right and responsible thing to do."
Modern aircraft are 75 per cent quieter than three decades ago, and the industry has set a target of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in 2000 noise levels by 2020.
