British Airways' workers agree to pay cuts
June 26, 2009British Airways staff have responded to Willie Walsh's calls to dig deep for the future of the airline. Almost 7,000 employees agreed to voluntary pay cuts, which will save the airline as much as £10 million.
About 4,000 staff will take unpaid leave, 1,400 will work part-time and 800 employees will work for free in July. Among those working for free next month will be Walsh, the Chief Executive, and Keith Williams, the Finance Director.
Walsh said: "This is a fantastic first response. I want to thank everyone who has volunteered to help us pull through this difficult period.
"This response clearly shows the significant difference individuals can make."
The 800 workers who will work for nothing will be able to stagger those days over a period of up to six months. The pay deduction will be spread over three or six months.
Workers who will work part-time will be able to do so for between one month and one year. Another review is expected later in 2009.
Those on unpaid leave can take the time off for up to a year.

Good luck to them. They're making an effort. But who is taking the cuts? Management on big salaries or front-line staff on basic wages?
