Aer Lingus to cut flights from Shannon Airport
June 12, 2009Aer Lingus is to axe key routes from Shannon Airport (SNN) this winter. There are also plans to reduce the number of flights it offers from Dublin Airport.
The Irish flag carrier is expected to announce these changes at lunchtime today (Friday, June 12), The Irish Times reports.
Flights to New York and Chicago, from Shannon, will be grounded between October and March 2010. However, it is believed that the Shannon-Boston route, which operates four-times-per-week, will be retained.
There will also be a reduction in services from Dublin Airport to Washington and San Francisco.
Aer Lingus, in common with several other airlines, is being buffeted by the effects of the economic downtown.
Last week, Colm Barrington, Chairman of Aer Lingus, admitted to shareholders that the airline is experiencing its most difficult trading conditions in its 73-year history. Aer Lingus first took to the skies in 1936.
The news will come as a further blow to Shannon Airport. Yesterday, Delta Air Lines, the US carrier, announced that it will stop transatlantic flights from SNN from October.
