Wizz Air reduces baggage allowance
May 20, 2009Continental low-cost carrier Wizz Air has confirmed that it will be tightening baggage restrictions for all passengers from Friday (May 22).
The airline is reducing the allowance for checked-in baggage from 20kg to 15kg per person, with excess baggage charges rising from €10 to €15 for each extra kilogramme.
Anyone who makes their booking before Friday will not be affected by the change.
The new policy appears to mark an attempt by Wizz Air to emulate Ryanair's no-frills ethos, whereby extra revenue is generated from various optional extras.
Already the low-cost carrier offers travellers the opportunity to add a raft of premium-rate services to their booking, including priority boarding and extra legroom.
And alongside the tougher check-in allowances, passengers will now also be subject to stricter rules governing how much carry-on luggage they can take on-board.
Wizz Air celebrated its fifth anniversary yesterday (May 19). The airline has carried 18 million passengers since its inception, and is forecast to grow by 30 per cent in 2009.

I fly about once a month and all I can say is that I have not found Wizz Air to be a reliable airline. Since last year, I've booked five Wizz Air flights with bargain fares. The destination of one was changed; another was moved forward a day; and the third was moved back two days. I ended up paying much more for flights on other carriers, and I am still waiting for a refund for one of the Wizz Air flights.
