'I don't' - council says no to weddings on easyJet aircraft
May 29, 2009Lovebirds flying with easyJet will not get the chance to marry in the air after all. The airline's application to Luton Borough Council for pilots to be authorised to conduct civil partnership and marriage ceremonies was turned down.
As reported by Cheapflights on May 6, the low-cost carrier believed that the recession has created a market for wedding ceremonies en route to honeymoons.
Paul Simmons, UK Regional General Manager of easyJet, said: "Future brides and grooms can say 'I will' on the flight from London Gatwick to Olbia, on Sardinia, for example.
"After their marriage at a height of 30,000 feet they then can go directly on their honeymoon."
Today, Andrew McConnell, UK Communications Manager, said: "It would appear that faceless bureaucrats in windowless offices have scuppered the dreams of many who wished to get married in the air."
All may not be lost however. Couples who wish to have an aviation-themed wedding may be able to get married at easyJet HQ.
A spokeswoman for the council said: "We would be happy to consider licensing easyJet's ground facilities at London Luton Airport."
