Aer Lingus axes five winter routes
May 12, 2009Aer Lingus has confirmed that it will be suspending five of its connections from Belfast International Airport during the 2009/10 winter timetable.
The Irish national carrier told The Belfast Telegraph that one aircraft will be relocated from the base – a move that it described as a "temporary reduction for four months".
The affected routes – Faro, Barcelona, Milan, Rome and Paris – are scheduled to stop at some point between September 21 and October 24.
Aer Lingus spokesman Enda Corneille explained that the services were never intended to be year-round connections, and that it still regards Belfast as a key base.
"There is a lot of life in the Northern Irish market, but we have to be prudent as we get into the winter to make the right decisions so that the airline remains strong," he said.
Mr Corneille predicted that the services will resume "when we get through the winter, get through the maintenance programme and we are back to full steam very early in March 2010".
Aer Lingus recently announced the launch of two new connections from Belfast this winter, opening up links to the Spanish resorts of Tenerife and Lanzarote.
