Ryanair threatens to axe Dusseldorf route
April 23, 2009Ryanair is threatening to pull one of its key German links from Manchester, citing concerns about plans to curb operating hours at Dusseldorf-Weeze Airport.
The low-cost carrier has stopped accepting bookings on the route, and says it may shut down the German base altogether if officials don't overturn their decision.
A court in Munster recently issued an injunction restricting operating hours for Dusseldorf-Weeze Airport, prompting Ryanair's reassessment of its commitment to the base.
"From today, Ryanair will no longer be accepting bookings on affected flights to or from Dusseldorf-Weeze for travel after May 2," Ryanair spokesman Michael Cawley said in a statement.
He continued: "If the decision to restrict the airport is not overturned by Wednesday, April 29 we will announce a plan to withdraw our base at Dusseldorf-Weeze, as it will be impossible to operate our schedule with these restrictions in place."
Around 2,500 people are currently employed at the German airport, which had been predicted to handle some 2.5 million passengers this year.

Yes and my wife works at Weeze airport for Ryanair. I'll be gutted if they pull out and she loses her job, along with the other 2499.
