New home for British Airways in Spain?
March 25, 2009British Airways could be relocating from Harmondsworth, England to a new home – in Spain. That is according to a report in The Times which confirms the merger between BA and Iberia is imminent.
After the merger the airlines could be operating under one parent company, yet continue as separate brands. The headquarters, however, might be moved to Spain and the Government has not objected to this move. In fact, the Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon, expressed his support by stating: “We would be completely at ease if the companies took this decision [to base in Spain].”
The report also suggests that if a parent company is formed Willie Walsh is likely to remain chief executive and Fernando Conte, the chairman of Iberia, would become chairman of both airlines.
Merger talks have been ongoing since July 2008 with the main objective being to improve the financial strength of the two airlines.
