Flyglobespan departs Durham Airport
February 3, 2009Flyglobespan has ceased its operations out of Durham Tees Valley Airport (DVTA), after declining to renew its lease at the base.
The budget airline has flown its final service from the regional hub, following the commencement of its operations there in March 2007, The Northern Echo has reported.
Speaking to the regional newspaper, a spokesman for Flyglobespan expressed "sadness" at the announcement, but suggested that it had been looking at "different ways of deploying its aircraft" at the base.
He said: "In today's economic climate, we have to ensure our assets are deployed in the most viable manner. "Unfortunately, that means we will not be flying from DTVA in 2009."
This is a blow for the relatively new airport, which has also seen flights suspended or reduced by the Hungarian carrier Wizz Air and bmi in the past couple of months.
DVTA is one the UK's smallest airports and operates services to a selection of domestic and European destinations.
