Monarch criticises Heathrow plans
January 22, 2009Monarch Airlines has "denounced" the government's verdict to allow the construction of a third runway at London Heathrow Airport.
The British regional airline suggested that the expansion, which would increase flights at the airport by at least 125,000 annually, will have significant environmental impacts and a "detrimental impact" on citizens of west London, The Telegraph has reported.
The decision to allow the £9 billion third runway was made earlier this month by the Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon, who claimed that it was "vital" for future economic growth.
Speaking to the national newspaper, Tim Jeans, managing director of Monarch Airlines, claimed that these plans could "turn people against airlines".
He said: "Environmental considerations must be taken seriously and decisions which may seem unpalatable for business need to be taken."
Monarch Airlines is based at London Luton Airport and operates services to over 100 worldwide destinations with its fleet of 31 planes.
