Govt delays Heathrow decision
December 4, 2008The government's decision on whether London Heathrow Airport will be allowed to expand has been held back until January.
In a statement to parliament, Geoff Hoon, the transport secretary, explained that the issue requires further consultation and called on all sides of the political spectrum to help the government come to a conclusion.
BAA, the owner of the UK's largest airport, wants the third runway to be completed by 2020 as it could increase the number of flights from 480,000 annually to more than 700,000.
However, local residents and environmental groups have raised concerns about the increase in noise and pollution levels that it would undoubtedly bring.
Mr Hoon said in the statement: "I will ensure that I give proper consideration to the evidence before me and will therefore take more time before making an announcement … in January 2009."
Last week, BAA suggested that it would appoint an independent assessor to limit noise and air quality if the government approves the third runway plans.
