Bristol Airport could 'double in size'

Bristol International Airport could double in size if new planning applications are approved.

The terminal extension would enable the Airport to handle ten million passengers annually by 2016 and would also increase the number of aircraft stands by nine, taking the total to 33.

A planning application is set to be submitted in March and will also include details of new parking facilities and an overflow car park on land to the east of the A38.

However, members of the Stop Bristol Airport Expansion campaign group believe that this will cause more misery for local residents.

A spokesman told The Weston Mercury: "At a time when we are all being asked to cut back on carbon emissions, there can only be one conclusion from a consultation - Bristol International Airport is already big enough."

The south-west based airport is the country's ninth busiest and handled 5.9 million passengers in 2007.
