Belfast Airport seeks runway extension
November 17, 2008Belfast City Airport has submitted a planning application to extend its runway, which if approved would allow its planes to fly to new destinations.
The plans, which are being opposed by residents' groups, would increase the length of the George Best Belfast City Airport by 590 metres in the direction of Belfast Lough.
This extension will enable airlines like Ryanair to fly with more passengers and with heavier fuel loads to a select number of European destinations.
Brian Ambrose, the airport's managing director, explained that it would not lead to an increase in flights.
He said: "We have made no secret of our ambitions to fly to a select number of European destinations, which, if the runway is extended, will undoubtedly improve customer choice and value."
Currently, Belfast City Airport operates services to a number of British destinations, as well as a Flybe schedule to the French city of Rennes.
