Air France-KLM drops London to LAX service
October 10, 2008Air France-KLM is axing its service between London Heathrow and Los Angeles this winter.
Despite having been introduced just six months ago, the route is being pulled by Europe's largest carrier as part of wider restructuring prompted by the global economic downturn.
No precise date has been set for the cancellation, but Travel Mole reported that the final flight is expected to take place in November.
Announcing the revision to its Heathrow timetable, Air France-KLM said that passenger numbers had been disappointing enough to warrant axing the service.
It faced stiff competition from rival operators BA, Virgin Atlantic, United Airlines, American Airlines and Air New Zealand - all of whom fly to the States from the UK hub.
SkyTeam partner Delta Air Lines also operates a twice-daily service to New York JFK, which reports suggest Air France-KLM may augment with an additional flight next year.
In the mean time, rather than relinquishing its valuable take-off and landing slots at Heathrow, the carrier will replace its LAX service with an extra connection to Paris.
