Wizz Air pulls Durham Tees Valley flights
September 1, 2008Wizz Air is axing all its flights from Durham Tees Valley Airport, The Northern Echo reports.
The no-frills carrier will discontinue its thrice weekly service to Warsaw in two weeks time, despite having only introduced the route last summer.
Flagging demand caused by a reduction in the number of Polish migrant labourers is believed to have prompted the withdrawal.
The north-east has one of the largest migrant worker populations in Britain, with statistics from 2006 estimating some 4,700 labourers are based in the region.
But as a spokesman for Durham Tees Valley Airport explained, the deteriorating economic climate has now changed conditions on the ground dramatically.
He singled out "extremely high fuel prices and the fact there has been a marked reduction generally in the number of Polish people travelling to the UK in order to gain employment".
Last month Wizz Air also announced it is axing its final remaining service from Coventry Airport.
