Thomsonfly axe Durham Tees Valley route
September 24, 2008Thomsonfly (website: www.thomsonfly.com) is to stop flying from Durham Tees Valley Airport to the Spanish resort of Alicante, The Northern Echo reports.
The airline - which will soon be re-branded Thomson Airways after merging with First Choice Airways - said it will axe the regular service next summer.
The cancellation comes on the heels of a move by Hungarian carrier Wizz Air to pull its Warsaw-bound flights from the regional base.
One regular traveller to Alicante expressed dismay at the development, telling The Northern Echo: "Everybody is in the dark about what is happening."
He emphasised the convenience of being able to use Durham Tees Valley as opposed to larger airports such as Newcastle, but a spokesman for airport owner Peel Airports defended the move.
"We can understand that regular customers do become accustomed to using particular airlines and operators, but the travel industry is subject to continuing developments," he commented.
The spokesman also noted that Ryanair has scheduled a more flexible service from Durham Tees Valley to Alicante next year.
