Zoom collapses, passengers left stranded
August 29, 2008Zoom Airlines went into administration yesterday (August 28), leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
The airline, based in the UK and Canada, said that it collapsed as a result of the economic slowdown and a steep rise in fuel costs.
According to the BBC, UK managing director Jonathan Hinkles revealed that the carrier's fuel bill increased by £15 million during the last year.
Zoom's demise came about after a number of its planes were grounded due to non-payment to creditors for leasing and various other fees. All flights have now been cancelled.
As such, passengers who had travelled to Glasgow Airport yesterday expecting to board flights to Canada were left waiting for several hours and were eventually told they were unable to depart.
Passengers with flights booked on Zoom are advised to contact their debit or credit card suppliers in order to obtain a refund. The airline's website www.flyzoom.com has a complete list of alternative airlines that fly each of the routes.
In a statement on its official website, Zoom noted: "Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have indicated that they will be offering special fares to customers whose travel plans have been affected by Zoom's suspension of flights."
Zoom was founded in 2001 and flew to Canada from Glasgow, Gatwick, Manchester, Cardiff and Belfast airports.

I read about this in the Metro this morning, another one bites the dust. Effects of the global credit crunch... I hope the passengers stranded at Glasgow made it to their destinations - sounds like a great inconvenience...
