Wizz Air pulls final Coventry Airport service
August 14, 2008Wizz Air is to pull out of Coventry Airport when it axes its final route from the base next month.
The low-cost carrier will stop operating its thrice-weekly service to the Polish city of Katowice on September 15, severing all links with the regional airport.
Its departure follows the cancellation of flights from Coventry to Gdansk in May, which had been launched just two months previously.
When the Katowice connection took to the skies this summer, it was billed as heralding a new wave of expansion for the airport.
However, expectations that Coventry's strong Polish population would ensure success for the link proved to be ill-founded, with passenger numbers remaining low.
Commenting on the cancellation of the route, a Wizz Air spokesperson told The Coventry Telegraph: "The trends are changing and the demand for city breaks is on the increase, while the trends towards working in the UK are in decline."
Demand is also believed to have been adversely affected by the launch of a competing Ryanair service from Birmingham Airport.
