KLM trials self-service drop-off facility
July 10, 2008KLM has begun trialling a self-service luggage check-in system at its base in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
People flying with the Dutch national carrier can now drop off their luggage without the assistance of terminal staff, provided they are carrying only one piece of hold-on luggage.
The airline plans to trial the scheme for six months, before deciding whether or not to roll out the facility on a permanent basis.
To use the system, KLM passengers must place their baggage inside a machine in Schiphol's Departure Hall 2, before scanning their boarding pass and answering security questions via a self-service kiosk.
The luggage is then weighed and a label is printed out for travellers to attach to their cases, which go on to be subjected to the same security checks as those that are checked-in manually.
Commenting on the new facility, an airport spokesman was quoted by BusinessTravelWorld.com as saying it "may in future become a standard part of the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol check-in process".
He added: "The passengers' experiences in using the system are important and will be taken into account."
