EU strengthens aviation ties with Australia
May 2, 2008The European Union has signed an aviation agreement with Australia that will liberalise air travel between the two continents.
Under the agreement, nationality restrictions have been scrapped for all EU member states and for the first time the EU zone will be treated as a single market for air transport.
Although bilateral agreements remain in place between individual countries and Australia, the move has been received as a significant step towards unifying EU member states.
According to the European Commission, the establishment of a horizontal relationship between the two regions is an essential way of linking people, cultures and businesses.
The Commission had proposed opening broader aviation negotiations with Australia as long ago as in September 2005.
