KLM launches new carbon offsetting scheme
March 3, 2008KLM has announced details of a new carbon offsetting scheme for its passengers, called CO2ZERO.
The airline has claimed that the new initiative will be integrated in both the online booking and check-in processes, with 100 per cent of every contribution being put towards offsetting projects.
Only Gold Standard schemes will be helped by the undertaking, meaning they have the highest available carbon dioxide certificate and are fully supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
"We fully support this CO2 compensation service," said Johan van de Gronden, managing director of the WWF in the Netherlands, said:
"We think it is a good idea to offer passengers this easy-to-use opportunity mitigating the impact on the environment."
Commenting on the link-up with WWF, KLM's president, Peter Hartman, said: "Only through this harmonious interaction with our stakeholders it is possible to continue stepping forward towards a sustainable aviation."
KLM has also sought to emphasise its overall strategy towards tackling the environmental impact of aviation, with the airline organising an international discussion between various stakeholders to share ideas and visions relating to increasing its sustainability.
