Hand baggage restriction set to be lifted at selected UK airports
January 2, 2008Passengers travelling from a number of UK airports are set to benefit from the lifting of restrictions limiting hand baggage to one item per person.
Nineteen airports around Britain have been given approval by the Department for Transport (DfT) to make the change, which will come into effect next Monday (January 7).
However, the government department has warned that the ultimate decision over the number of hand baggage items permitted now lies with individual airlines, and passengers should check before travelling.
At the same time, passengers have been warned that restrictions on liquids remain, with more than 100ml of any liquid not allowed through security.
Andrew Cornish, managing director of Manchester Airport, one of those set to see a lifting of restrictions, advised: "We would appeal to passengers to check the liquids rule and make sure they understand the current position. We need passengers to help us to keep queues to a minimum."
The airports where the hand baggage restriction is to be lifted are as follows: Aberdeen, Benbecula, Birmingham, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London Heathrow, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, London City, Manchester, Plymouth, Prestwick, Southampton, Southend, London Stansted, Stornaway, Sumburgh and Wick.
