East Midlands Airport gains service to Pakistan
October 23, 2007
On Friday (October 19) a new twice a week service between East Midlands Airport and Islamabad, in Pakistan, took to the skies for the first time.
The new connection is operated by UK International Airlines (UKIA) and will depart each Tuesday and Friday, going via Sharjah, near Dubai, with the inaugural flight marking the first scheduled, long haul service between East Midlands Airport and Pakistan.
Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands Airport, said: "This announcement is a fantastic endorsement of our first class facilities here at the airport and is a real coup for everyone involved in developing this link to a new country.
"The service has generated positive interest so far and we are sure the people of the East Midlands region and beyond will make good use of this route."
Managing director of UKIA, Mir Zaman, said he believed the new service would appeal to people from the Midlands, Yorkshire and Lancashire, and that the airline would provide 200 jobs for the local community in the first year.
