Ryanair considers restarting Belfast to Shannon route
June 18, 2007Ryanair is considering operating flights between Shannon and Belfast.
Speaking last week with County Clare's mayor, Councillor Flan Garvey, Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said he had requested a feasibility study be carried out into the route.
Irish flag-carrier Aer Lingus used to operate Belfast to Shannon flights as part of its Belfast to New York service, but the leg was dropped in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Councillor Garvey stressed the huge potential demand that existed for travel between the two cities, noting that Aer Lingus used to carry up to 22,000 passengers a year on the route.
"Aligned with strong links between County Clare and Northern Ireland, as well as the changing attitudes to air travel, there certainly is potential for the reopening of this route," he said.
Separately, passengers acting quickly can benefit from Ryanair's latest £10 seat sale.
For bookings made today (June 18), the airline is offering seats for £10 (including taxes and charges) on routes such as Stansted to Biarritz and Frankfurt (Hahn), Birmingham to Dublin and Manchester to Shannon.
Travel from Monday to Thursday and Saturday (Monday to Thursday only in July and August).
