Security facilities increased at Stansted
January 15, 2007More security equipment is to be installed at Stansted Airport to help speed up the processing of passengers.
The search area is to be extended so that additional x-ray machines and arches can be installed, along with more entry points and security lanes, which it is hoped will increase the number of passengers that can pass through security every hour.
The area, which will be operational by March and cost £2 million, has been installed after increased security measures were introduced at UK airports following the discovery of a suspected terror attack involving liquid explosives.
Mark Murphy, Stansted’s customer service director, said: “This investment clearly demonstrates our commitment to reducing queuing times at security and provide even better customer service, while maintaining the highest security standards.”
Over the past twelve months Stansted has taken on around 300 new security officers to help staff the central search area, which is the largest of any European airport.
Stansted is the fourth busiest airport in the UK, handling more than 20 million passengers per year, and is home to a number of low-cost airlines including Ryanair and easyJet.
