Cab drivers cancel airport protest
December 15, 2006Black cab drivers called off a planned go-slow on the streets around Liverpool John Lennon Airport after agreement was reached that will see talks in the New Year.
Drivers were set to protest at plans to introduce an annual £2,400 charge set by the airport so that they could pick up and drop off passengers.
But airport bosses have agreed to sit down with officials from the Transport and General Workers Union, who represent many of the cab drivers, to work towards an amicable solution.
In a statement Liverpool John Lennon Airport said: “It has been decided by all parties concerned that the best way forward is to abandon the proposed permit system and arrange further talks in the near future on the implementation of a chargeable barrier system, due to be in place by February 19.
“A series of meetings have been arranged for the New Year for these negotiations to be concluded.”
