Eirjet close to collapse
October 19, 2006Irish charter airline Eirjet has suspended operations because of financial troubles.
The airline had been issued with a temporary license by the Commission for Aviation Regulation, amid worries that it was about to cease flying. The license was not due to expire until October 28 but the company has stopped operations already.
"We have voluntarily suspended all flights from today so as to minimise the inconvenience to the public," the airline said in a statement seen by FinFacts Ireland.
Eirjet, which is based in Shannon and leased passenger planes to tour operators including Sunworld and Toplight, added that it was seeking further economic support but admitted that it was in "very difficult financial circumstances at the moment".
The airline also flew from Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Knock airports to the Mediterranean, and had applied to the US Department of Transportation for permission to fly charters to the United States.
Eirjet was founded in 2004.
