Britons spend big on holidays
October 9, 2006Holidaymakers in the UK will spend around £97 billion on getting away from it all this year, a survey from Axa Insurance claims.
Nearly half of this amount is taken up in the cost of the actual holiday booking, but a total of £29 billion is also set aside for their spending money.
Brits also want to look good when on holiday with £7 billion spent on new clothes, however, travel insurance to protect these goodies accounted for less than 5 per cent of total holiday spend at an estimated £4 billion for the year.
The survey also showed that the UK and Ireland were the most popular holiday destinations with 22.4 million people.
In second place was Spain with 12.2 million UK holidaymakers, followed by France in third place with 8.3 million.
Axa said 50 per cent of people took between one and three holidays a year, whilst one in 10 Britons treats themselves to four or five breaks.
