Flight news from American skies
September 27, 2006Much to the relief of airlines and travellers alike, security restrictions have been relaxed over the past week in the UK and, as Adfero reported on our US Cheap Flight News site, in Canada.
Transport Canada, like the Department for Transport in the UK, relaxed the rules on what can be carried on board flights departing from Canadian airports from last Friday (September 22). With the exception of those flying to the United States, passengers can now carry previously restricted items such as liquids, gels, and aerosols.
Over the past few months, Jerry Chandler has been reporting on labour relations problems at Northwest Airlines, which, due to the imposition of work contracts, “continue to slide south”. Now another major airline is having trouble with the workers. Just as Delta Air Lines is starting to come back from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, pilots for Delta Connection regional airline Atlantic Southeast Airlines are opening a strike centre in Atlanta. At issue are contract negotiations, which started four years ago.
It’s not all bad news though. Chandler writes that the airline industry is in rude good health. The proof is in a new report by OAG, the travel information company, which says that compared to this time last year, 2,133 new routes have been launched or reinstated worldwide, representing more than 18,000 new flights per week.
Finally, Chandler reports on an innovation at Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando. If you’re staying at the hotel, Mickey Mouse will do the are heavy lifting for you. “Bypass baggage claim, hop on board Disney's Magical Express bus, and relax. Your luggage is delivered right to your room,” he writes. Well, maybe not by Mickey Mouse himself or anyone in a mouse suit for that matter, but help is help.
